Brief

Here a presenter pitches Strobe Flashlight Launcher as the replacement for a flashlight app he deleted after checking his phone's permissions, in a 34-second organic post. His old app, he says, “had access to features I never used,” which leads to his question: “It's a flashlight. Why does it need all that?”

It speaks to people who already keep a flashlight app on their phone and have never checked what it can reach. The post has to hold them on a small privacy scare and turn it into trust in this app, earning the follow or the download on “The controls are clear and I can choose which optional features I want to use.”

Format and style

A selfie talking head in a bright room with pale blue walls and a white door behind him. The presenter, a bald man with a graying goatee in a gray quarter-zip with a dark collar, talks straight into the lens and, from the moment he names the app, holds the phone beside his chest with the app open and facing the camera.

Captions run in heavy white italic capitals across the middle of the frame, two or three words at a time. A warning like this needs a face the viewer believes, and his grin on “which sounds like a low bar for a flashlight app, but here we are” gives it a wink; it is the same talking head craft I use in AI app install ads.

How it was made

I open on his face with “Don't download another flashlight app,” while a black and white clip of a person on a couch in a dark living room plays in the lower half of the frame, a red arrow pointing at it. On “I was checking the permissions on my phone one day” he pushes a phone toward the lens, and I cut to the quick settings panel, where a “Recently accessed” list shows Location and Microphone, for “had access to features I never used.”

“It's a flashlight” plays over a woman in a yellow coat aiming a beam into dark trees, and “So I deleted it and found” over hands scrolling a phone in front of a laptop. From “the strobe flashlight launcher” on he holds the app up beside him and points his thumb at himself on “and I can choose.” For “Download it now for free” the yellow flashlight icon and a “Get it on Google Play” badge appear over his chest as a faded shot of the lit phone in grass rises from the bottom, and the post closes on “It only takes about 30 seconds to set up.”
